The standard of healthcare available in Hong Kong is comparable to that of most European countries. However it should be noted that it runs a close second to the United States in terms of cost when it comes to private medical treatment, therefore a private health insurance policy is highly recommended.

In recent years the public hospital system has caught up with the rest of the highly developed world in terms of both quality of healthcare and technology employed and many expatriates use the public system for more serious issues such as childbirth and surgery. 14 Hospitals have accident and emergency units and are supported by the Fire Services Department Ambulance Service, which aims to respond to emergency calls (the number is 999) within 12 minutes – they achieved this in 92.2% of cases in 2008.

Most expatriates are happy to consult with local GPs as the majority are educated in the West, however there are also a number of practices that cater specifically to expats and their families.

Beyond the realms of what might be deemed as “necessary” healthcare, Hong Kong is a pamperer’s playground with almost limitless choices of treatments and manipulations on offer.
