Out and About
Beyond Central - The South Side

Head to the south side for quick fix relief from the intensity Hong Kong living.  The moment you pop out of the Aberdeen tunnel you can feel a little bit of that urban pressure subside.  And it's the easiest way to impress visitors who have not ventured beyond the confines of Central or Causeway Bay, they are generally astonished when they see the golden sands and green jungle.

There are a number of great hikes (note to the Brits; the word hike in this context does not mean rucksacks, a compass, maps and Kendal Mint Cake.., it is basically a robust walk) that can terminate with a cleansing ale or iced tea.

Funky and unusual décor accompanied by pretty good Italian food.

Jean-Paul Gauci hosts this Euro French restaurant overlooking the beach.  Not quite Cinquante Cinq, but there should be more places like this.

A legend in its own lunchtime.  An ideal end to a morning hike, or for the less vertically inclined, a jolly spot for a cold beer and a hot curry.

Shek O village

Wander into Shek O on a Sunday and have lunch at the Thai beside the roundabout followed by a stroll around the village.  You can watch the mating rituals of young Hong Kongers as the boys lead their (potential) girlfriends around, photographing them (often with a friend/assistant in tow) in sultry poses by the roadside.   Finish your adventure with a stubby cooler clad beer at the tiny Back Bar beside the windsurfing club.
